WEBVTT 00:00:15.160 --> 00:00:19.680 Welcome to the early careers workshop for  economics organized by the Economics Network. 00:00:19.680 --> 00:00:24.280 Over the course of two very engaging days,  a group of experienced economics educators 00:00:24.280 --> 00:00:30.120 will engage in insightful dialogues on teaching  economics at University level. This Workshop is 00:00:30.120 --> 00:00:35.320 carefully designed to empower junior colleagues  starting their journey as lecturers, as assistant 00:00:35.320 --> 00:00:40.760 professors or teaching fellows in economics who  have responsibility on designing and delivering 00:00:40.760 --> 00:00:46.400 lectures. In the workshop we go beyond generic  training provided at institutional level to 00:00:46.400 --> 00:00:52.840 explore teaching issues that are specific to  economics. Annika, do you want to tell us something 00:00:52.840 --> 00:01:00.480 about the benefits of joining the early careers  workshop for economics? Yeah so I think even 00:01:00.480 --> 00:01:04.720 if you're an experienced teacher there's often  this big jump you go through in the early 00:01:04.720 --> 00:01:10.720 careers phase. Like I know in my case I went  from running lots of quantitative methods 00:01:10.720 --> 00:01:15.920 seminars and then suddenly was in charge of a  big theory-based unit that involved interacting 00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:21.200 with large teaching teams. I think for me the  workshop's really helpful for helping me meet 00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:26.120 other people at similar early career stages  in economics but also helping me understand 00:01:26.120 --> 00:01:33.400 how what I'm doing with my unit connects to the  whole world of UK higher education quality 00:01:33.400 --> 00:01:38.240 assurance and frameworks and standards and things  like that but also just for understanding how I 00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:44.320 can use examples of really great practice in  economics education from all around the world 00:01:44.320 --> 00:01:51.160 to make my own course better. You know I  think what we do as economics educators is 00:01:51.160 --> 00:01:56.640 really difficult, right? We don't just use maths;  we don't just use text; we use both of them all 00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:04.000 the time alongside diagrams and graphs and coding  and pictures and all of those things might be in 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:10.200 one session. So understanding how to do that  efficiently for me and really effectively for 00:02:10.200 --> 00:02:14.760 the students is something it's really useful  to you know reflect on for the couple of 00:02:14.760 --> 00:02:18.760 days of this Workshop so that I can do things  better going forwards. That's certainly what I 00:02:18.760 --> 00:02:23.560 took away from it anyway. Thank you very much  Annika, I completely agree. Teaching economics is 00:02:23.560 --> 00:02:29.920 quite complex but this is not just about teaching  economics: we believe the workshop can benefit all 00:02:29.920 --> 00:02:35.040 aspects of our academic career. Chris, do you want  to tell us more about it? Yeah you don't have to 00:02:35.040 --> 00:02:41.280 look very hard to realize that teaching is  becoming more important in UK universities 00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:47.240 and so for many of us learning how to teach  better, more effectively, is just a no-brainer. 00:02:47.240 --> 00:02:52.680 However it's much wider than that too. Even if  you're just purely research minded - if you're 00:02:52.680 --> 00:02:58.040 just after that top five publication - you  still need to learn how to teach efficiently. 00:02:58.040 --> 00:03:01.760 If anyone's ever gone through writing a  bad assessment and having hundreds of emails 00:03:01.760 --> 00:03:05.840 of students trying to clarify things or having  a student complaint and having all the stress 00:03:05.840 --> 00:03:11.480 and heartache of that they're learning, these  quick tips is just going to be so, so valuable. 00:03:11.480 --> 00:03:15.560 More generally, I think learning to teach also  has some benefits in helping you to communicate 00:03:15.560 --> 00:03:20.640 and present your research. So I really think  there's benefits for all academics no matter 00:03:20.640 --> 00:03:26.840 what your role exactly is. Thank you very much.  I do think this workshop is carefully structured 00:03:26.840 --> 00:03:32.120 to foster interactivity and to provide a lot of  opportunities for you to get guidance to share 00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:38.280 insights and to receive personalized feedback on  your teaching and assessment materials. In fact 00:03:38.280 --> 00:03:43.520 before the workshop we encourage you to complete  pre-workshop activities to help us tailor the 00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:51.720 sessions to your specific needs and aspirations.  So join us and thank you; I'll see you soon.
