Professor David Evans cuts the ribbon

The Centre was formally launched on Wednesday 8th March at the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT). Professor David Evans, the Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at the University of Bristol cut the yellow ribbon and pronounced the centre officially open.

There were speeches by Professor Evans, Director of the centre John Sloman and Deputy Director Tony Brewer. Professor Evans noted the lack of parity in funding and consequently status between teaching and research but commented that subject review had placed teaching back on the agenda. He hoped that the LTSN centres would contribute both in ensuring standards in learning and teaching were improved and by recognising existing good practice. John Sloman outlined his vision and strategy for the centre and Professor Brewer traced the origins of both the centre and indeed the ILRT to an economics software package programmed for the BBC micro.

The launch was held as part of an Open Exhibition hosted by the Learning Technology Support Service (LTSS) showcasing innovative teaching at the University. Over 100 people attended the event that involved stands and exhibitions from a variety of academics and projects, including four of the LTSN centres, and a 'drop-in' video-conferencing showcase.
